Philippine Nov. 17 (CNA) Taiwan and the Philippines signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation in the field of intellectual property protection Saturday at the end of a two-day bilateral economic conference in Manila. Republic of China Minister of Economic Affairs Steve Chen signed the MOU on behalf of his government with his Philippine counterpart. Peter Favila under which both sides promise to cooperate with each other in intellectual property rights protection and exchanges of information and personnel. Chen told the CNA that both sides had raised many issues during the conference which reflects the wide range of cooperation between Taipei and Manila. Knowing that Taiwan enjoys many strengths in the field of information technology the Philippine side asked for Taiwan's help in training integrated circuit designers and in encouraging Taiwan high-tech companies to invest in the Philippines. In addition to investing in Subic Bay freeport zone which is already astronghold of Taiwan companies operating in the Philippines. Chen said the Philippine side also asked Taiwan businesses to set up factories at the Clark Special Zone located north of Manila. In request to attract Taiwan businesses. Chen said the Philippine side agreed to give Taiwan high-tech companies investing in the country tax breaks for between six and eight years. The Philippines also agree to offer Taiwan companies' executives and professional cater 90-day visas in addition to work permits according to Chen. Taiwan is the Philippines' tenth largest source of foreign investment. Chen said adding that Taiwan investment in the country increased from US$193 million in 2004 to US$225 million in 2006.
